Trousers, Slacks and Pants

It may come as a surprise to some today that women wearing trousers is a relatively recent thing, only for the last 100 or so years did women delve in to the male side of the drawers to pull out a pair of their husbands, brothers or Dads trousers.

Today it is totally accepted that women wear trouser like leg wear in fact I would guess that women wear trousers and pants more than skirts and dresses.

But why and how did this happen.  Mainly it was due to necessity, industrialisation, work in heavy industry, mining and the such like by women ensured that the more traditional skirts being, cumbersome, hazardous or difficult to move in.  Throw on a pair of trousers and you had protection and greater manoeuvrability.  The adoption of trousers by women in Victorian times didn’t come without controversy.  The Wigan pit brow girls scandalized Victorian society by wearing trousers for their dangerous work in the coal mines. They wore skirts over their trousers and rolled them up to their waist to keep them out of the way.

Although industry, mechanisation and World War II saw women wearing trousers at work more frequently it wasnt really until the latter part of the 20th Century that trousers for women became more regular attire for women.

However as this Ancient Greek Vase (on the left) shows this Amazon is shown wearing trousers and carrying a shield amongst other things.  Maybe the trousers we’re the chosen item for Amazon Female Warriors long before modern women found 20th Century trouser freedom.

Amazon Female Warriors as legend describe them. Could it not be the case that these women where a tribe of Two Spirits or mixture of Natal Females and Two Spirits – if so may be being Two Spirit in ancient times was a more widely the norm rather than the exception that it is today.
