The Ghost of Man: Finding Balance in the Battle of the Sexes
We used to be hunters. Protectors. Providers. Not always gently, not always fairly—but undeniably, we had a place. Now, after decades of well-warranted upheaval and the rise of feminist power structures, many men are left peering into a cultural mirror that no longer reflects them. They’re not at the centre. They’re not even in the frame.
What happens when a man no longer knows what it means to be one?
This is not a plea to return to some imagined golden age of patriarchy. That house was built on the backs of too many women. But in burning it down, we’ve left a gender in ashes, fumbling for new blueprints. Today, masculinity is shrinking—not just socially, but existentially. The last rites of manhood seem to be the ability to grow a beard and pee standing up. After that? Ghosthood. Irrelevance. Quiet shame.
Feminism has long been the dominant cultural force—and rightly so in many ways. But it has become a monologue, not a dialogue. And while it opened much-needed space for women’s voices, it has rarely asked where that leaves the men. Especially the good men. The sensitive ones. The ones who don’t want to dominate but to serve. To build. To love.
And into this vacuum steps the transgender perspective—particularly male-to-female, the path I walk as a Two Spirit.
We are not here to erase masculinity. We are the bridge between it and the feminine. We carry both. We understand the burden men bear to be stoic, strong, and useful, even when no one asks them how they feel. And we understand what women have fought for, bled for, and still struggle to claim in a world shaped by historical imbalance.
But here’s the thing: evolution gave men the need to be needed. Not just in bed, or as walking wallets, but as protectors, anchors, and contributors to something greater than themselves. Strip that away, and you don’t liberate men—you flatten them. You wound them, then mock their silence.
The third way
The Two Spirit view offers a third way. Not just man, not just woman—but a balancing point. A witness to both truths. Not an arbiter, not a referee—but a soul who sees the value in both, and knows the war has no winner.
Maybe what we need now is not more shouting from either side, but a return to complementarity. Respect. Not the resurrection of gender roles, but the reweaving of gender meaning. Where strength and softness walk hand in hand, in all people.
The ghost of man doesn’t need to haunt the fringes. He needs to be welcomed back—not to dominate, but to dance beside the feminine, as he was once meant to. Not over her. Not beneath her. Beside her.
This is what I’ve come to see. This is what I carry, between worlds.
And maybe—just maybe—it’s time to stop battling altogether and start building anew
